Abstract

The Ahl al-Bayt possessed a distinctive command of the methods by which subsidiary legal rulings are derived from revealed sources, and their teachings circulated among the Companions, Successors, and the formative jurists of the Sunni schools. This study asks how the Ahl al-Bayt influenced Sunni rules of juristic inference. Using a descriptive-analytical and source-based method, it examines reports transmitted from the Ahl al-Bayt alongside representative Sunni works of uṣūl al-fiqh. The findings identify three principal channels of influence. First, the Ahl al-Bayt articulated linguistic rules concerning textual indication, general and particular expressions, absolute and qualified terms, and the use of grammatical conventions in deriving legal rulings. Second, their teachings shaped methods of reasoning, including rational inference, the treatment of conflicting proofs, and practical principles for cases of uncertainty. Third, prominent Sunni jurists acknowledged the superior learning of members of the Ahl al-Bayt, studied with them, or relied on traditions transmitted through them. The study concludes that the methodological relationship between the Ahl al-Bayt and Sunni jurisprudence was substantive rather than merely biographical, and that recovering this shared intellectual heritage can deepen comparative Islamic legal studies.
